Cadillac Going Electric With New Midsize Crossover

First battery model off all-new GM BEV architecture do around late 2020.

Cadillac retook its position as General Motor's innovative brand with the reveal of its first EV off a new flexible platform. The finished CUV arrives in 2020.

Cadillac will become the first brand to use the all-new battery-electric vehicle architecture parent General Motors is developing, with its first all-electric model, a midsize crossover, scheduled to come to market in late 2020 or early 2021.

The new, skateboard-like platform will have significant flexibility, said Cadillac President Steve Carlisle during a media event marking the start of the 2019 North American International Auto Show. It eventually will allow Caddy and its sibling GM brands to produce a wide range of sizes, shapes and drivetrain layouts as the automaker begins to shift away from conventional gas and diesel-powered vehicles.

The new platform, said Carlisle, “can build literally everything in the portfolio,” including vehicles that are front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive. And by varying the number of batteries in the pack hidden under the vehicle load floor, GM can offer varying ranges while pricing for different segments of the market. (more…)

Cadillac Reshapes Line-up with new XT6 Crossover

Utility vehicle will replace CT6 sedan as premium offering.

Cadillac's new XT6 will go up against a tough set of competitors, including the Acura MDX, the three-row Lexus RX and the new Lincoln Aviator.

Cadillac has been in the midst of a “renaissance” for nearly two decades, but it’s a turnaround that has never quite taken hold, especially in the home U.S. market where sales took another 1.1% dip last year.

The big problem has been the lackluster success of the marque’s sedan models, something that is leading to a sharp cutback over the next couple years, with the CTS and ATS models effectively being consolidated and the flagship CT6 set to vanish by the end of 2019.

The real test for Cadillac comes on the light truck side of the ledger where it has fared a bit better. The new XT4, its smallest SUV, has been a solid hit since its autumn launch. And now, Caddy is pushing upward, with the all-new XT6 that will essentially replace the CT6 sedan as its premium offering.

Cadillac Suspends Subscription Plan

No word on what will replace Book by Cadillac.

Book by Cadillac, the brand's new subscription service, has been suspended until next year.

General Motors’ Cadillac division is hitting pause on its vehicle subscription service, Book by Cadillac, then it will be relaunched early next year.

Andrew Lipman, a Cadillac spokesman, confirmed the plans, following a Wall Street Journal report that Cadillac was planning kill the program.

“Book by Cadillac is not canceled,” Lipman said. “We are stopping it for a short period of time to then relaunch it based off the learning we have made in early Q1. We are hitting the pause button and we will be back.” Lipman told Automotive News. Part of the problem Cadillac’s subscription program was that at $1,800 per month it was too pricey. (more…)

Cadillac Moving Back to Detroit

Cadillac is leaving New York City, returning to its spiritual home, Detroit.

Cadillac is trading the Big Apple for the Motor City, returning to its spiritual Michigan home after a brief flirtation with the bright lights of New York that was meant to get it closer to one of the country’s largest luxury car markets.

The move to New York was announced four years ago this month by former Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen and there has been widespread speculation since his ouster early this year that the experiment might come to an end.

Cadillac is beginning one of the most aggressive product rollouts in its history, the new XT4 SUV being the first of a wave that will see an additional product come to market every six months through the end of the decade. The need for better co-ordination between New York-based marketing and the rest of the Cadillac organization – which remained in Detroit – is prompting the General Motors luxury brand to give up its headquarters in New York City and move back to Detroit. Cadillac Expanding V-Series – Even as it Drops ATS-V, CTS-V Models

Performance models have “sparked new life.”

Even as it cuts its performance sedans, Cadillac is likely adding replacements, like a CT6-V.

High-performance models have become an essential part of a luxury brand’s line-up, as the BMW M, Mercedes-AMG and Audi S and RS models clearly demonstrate. So, it should be no surprise to see that Cadillac wants to play in the performance segment, as well.

General Motors’ luxury brand plans to expand the availability of its V-Series, Caddy now says, and that will be marked with the arrival of the new CT6-V version of its flagship sedan next spring. That said, two current V-Series models will soon be going away, Cadillac pulling the plug on both the ATS-V and CTS-V in the near future.

“Beginning with the debut of the CTS-V Sedan in 2004, the V-Series sub-brand sparked new life into Cadillac,” GM’s product development chief Mark Reuss said in a statement. “As a result of the overwhelming response the CT6 V-Sport received when revealed in early 2018, we’ve decided to formally make it a V-Series, signaling the expansion of V-Series.” (more…)

Cadillac Going Small With New XT4 Crossover

Cadillac is counting on its new compact crossover, the XT4, to revitalize and expand its buyer base.

Sitting at the very top of the famous pyramid that Alfred P. Sloan used to define the automotive market and values, Cadillac has always been General Motors’ flagship, offering style, luxury and innovation in a series of celebrated big vehicles that in the decades after World War II defined American affluence and influence.

But as the Post-War era gave way to a more complicated and contentious time, Cadillac has often seemed lost in the ongoing competition from Europe and Asia. But the brand’s masters at GM are eager to correct the course with a fleet of new vehicles they believe will redefine the brand’s image among luxury buyers particularly younger buyers.

Cadillac Culling Sedan Line-Up, New Plant Investment Emphasizing Shift to SUVs

ATS, XTS going away as passenger car sales slide.

Cadillac is planning to end production of the slow-selling ATS by 2021.

General Motors will invest $175 million in a Lansing, Michigan assembly plant to support production of two new Cadillac sedans, but in the process, Caddy is expected to dump drop the slow-selling ATS compact coupe and XTS full-size sedan.

Early in the new decade, those two models, as well as the midsize Cadillac CTS, will be replaced by just two all-new sedans, the automaker said. The cutback reflects both the overall U.S. market shift from passenger cars to utility vehicles and, more specifically, the poor sales performance of those three Caddy models.

It is not clear when the three current sedans will be dropped, but Cadillac isn’t expected to have the two replacement models ready to roll out of GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant until late in 2021, according to a spokesman. They will likely debut as 2022 models. (more…)

Amazon Will Now Deliver Packages to Your Car, as Well as Your Home

New program available to millions of GM and Volvo owners.

More than 100 million people, half of them in the U.S., now subscribe to online retail giant Amazon Prime. The $99-a-year service not only offers free delivery on most packages to a customer’s home but is now adding a new twist: customers can have packages delivered to the trunk of their vehicles.

The In-Car Delivery program will be available, starting today, to millions of owners of General Motors and Volvo vehicles in 37 U.S. cities. To use the service, a customer will simply choose “in-car delivery” among the various options Amazon offers.

Brand boss de Nysschen out in Shake-Up at Cadillac

Move comes at launch of critical new products.

Johan de Nysschen, now former Caddy chief, said in New York last month Caddy's upcoming product lines could double current sales.

Just weeks after presiding over the debut of two critical new products, the CT6 V-Sport sedan and XT4 sport-utility vehicle, Johan de Nysschen is out as the head of the Cadillac brand, replaced by Steve Carlisle, a fast-track executive credited with major turnarounds for parent General Motors in Canada and Thailand.

With extensive experience in the global luxury car market, including stints with BMW, Audi and Infiniti, de Nysschen laid out broad plans for Cadillac’s revival after joining the brand in 2014. That ranged from additions to its product portfolio to the decision to move Caddy from Detroit to New York City to give it more distance from the parent company and put it at the center of one of the country’s biggest luxury car markets. But several sources suggested senior GM management was growingly increasingly concerned about Caddy’s weak performance in its home market.

If you’re looking for one of the biggest, baddest luxury utes on the market, Cadillac is hoping to lure you into one of its U.S. showrooms. Aiming to shore itself up against an assault by Lincoln’s newly updated Navigator SUV, Caddy is firing back with discounts of up to $10,000 on its own Escalade model.

GM has traditionally dominated the full-size SUV segment, both mainstream and luxury, and it gained significant traction when it introduced an all-new version of the ‘Slade for the 2014 model-year. But that’s a lifetime ago in today’s hotly competitive market and Lincoln has been building momentum fast with the all-new version of the Navigator it launched last year.

While the two models don’t generate a lot of volume they serve up substantial profits for their respective manufacturers, providing plenty of room to load up the incentives. The question is whether Lincoln will now fire back with big givebacks of its own.
