Mercedes-Maybach is Coming Back

Super-luxurious crossover being built in Alabama.

by Michael Strong on Mar.18, 2019

Mercedes-Benz plans to build the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS at its plant in Alabama for global distribution.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is already churning out the GLS and a few other models, but the German automaker is adding one more to the line: The Mercedes-Maybach GLS.

Introduced in China last year as an EV concept, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS will join the next-generation sport-ute getting ready to hit dealerships later this year, according to Autonews. The plant will build the new Maybach for global distribution, the automaker noted.

Product News!

Ultra-luxurious crossover is obviously playing up the theme from the original Maybach, which had its admirers, but didn’t sell in large enough numbers to build as a regular model in the 1990s and early 2000s. (more…)

Mercedes-AMG Offers a More Thrills With New GT R Roadster

New roadster at home on the track or on the streets.

by Michael Strong on Mar.04, 2019

Mercedes is only producing 750 of its new AMG GT R Roadsters.

Though Mercedes-Benz, like many other automakers, is focusing on producing more SUVs and SUV-like vehicles it’s also not completely giving up on its performance-based models, especially if the new Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is any indication.

The German automaker is producing just 750 of the little open-air rockets globally. The roadster puts out 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo V8. A sprint from standstill to 60 mph is reached in 3.5 seconds. The exhilarating power delivery continues right up to the top speed of 197 mph.

More Than a Mid-Cycle Refresh: A First Look at the Mercedes-Benz GLC

Crossover coming to Geneva gets new engine, more tech, and some exterior updates.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Feb.28, 2019

The updated 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC will joint an assortment of other new models in Geneva.

Automakers love to promote every change they make to a vehicle, but most mid-cycle updates are limited to some subtle exterior and interior updates and a handful of new paint colors.

Not so the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC. The compact crossover is battling for space in an increasingly crowded segment and the German maker has wisely recognized that it will take more than just a new fascia to draw in buyers.

Auto Show News!

The 2020 GLC update isn’t a complete makeover, but there are still plenty of things to make note of, starting with the addition of an all-new four-cylinder engine, as well as the addition of Mercedes’ new MBUX personal voice assistant, and other new technologies.

Mercedes Saturates Geneva Motor Show with Debuts

German automaker flooding floor with debuts.

by Michael Strong on Feb.25, 2019

Mercedes-Benz will show off at least five new vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show this year.

While many of the world’s auto shows are struggling to keep long-time exhibitors at their events, it appears Mercedes-Benz – which didn’t participate in this year’s NAIAS – will ensure the Geneva Motor Show keeps at least one automaker on the show floor.

At the 89th Geneva Motor Show, the company will present the new CLA Shooting Brake and, for the first time, the Concept EQV and the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLC. In addition, Mercedes will take the covers off its Formula E showcar, the smart forease+ and the new V-Class.

News Now!

The big product story is the world premiere of the CLA Shooting Brake. It’s a “design counterpart” to the CLA Coupé. The shooting break’s exterior borrows from the coupe’s contoured and muscular rear haunches for its rear storage space.  (more…)

And Another One Bites the Dust: Farewell Mercedes SLC

Little roadster’s “Final Edition” rolls out – but so does a Grand Edition of bigger SL two-seater.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Feb.20, 2019

Mercedes-Benz is putting an end to its small roadster, but it'll go out with a bang with a "Final Edition" package.

The ongoing assault of the SUV is claiming yet another victim. In recent months, we’ve seen mainstream automakers steadily pare back their sedan, coupe and sports car lines and now, it seems, even luxury manufacturers are feeling the impact of the most dramatic industry shift in decades.

Mercedes-Benz is the latest throwing in the towel, getting ready to banish the once-popular SLC roadster originally known as the SLK. The good news for fans is that there’ll be an appropriately named Final Edition rolling into showrooms before the SLC drives off into the sunset.

Product News!

The German automaker isn’t abandoning the sports car market entirely. It’s been rolling out more versions of the Mercedes-AMG GT in recent months and, for roadster aficionados, there’s a new Grand Edition that adds even more high-line touches to the familiar SL line. (more…)

Mercedes Pulls Wraps Off Gen-2 CLA at CES

An emphasis on technology.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Jan.08, 2019

Mercedes-Benz is looking to recreate the buzz that the first-generation CLA generated during its debut in 2013.

If at first you do succeed, try, try again, or so one might say of the new sedan Mercedes-Benz unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today.

The original Mercedes CLA was one of the biggest hits the German brand ever had when it was launched in 2013, drawing in a mix of hip young buyers, many entering the luxury segment for the first time thanks to a price tag starting just under $30,000. The coupe-like sedan did have its share of critics, however, and Mercedes aims to address some of their concerns with the second-generation CLA.

Product News!

“The new edition of the CLA has been developed further in an intelligent way and is even more emotional and sportier than its predecessor,” said Britta Seeger, the global head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. “Coupled with new operating systems, it sets new benchmarks for the entire class.” (more…)

“Coming Soon” – Mercedes Teases Next-Gen CLA

But market has changed radically since coupe-like model first appeared.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Dec.17, 2018

Mercedes has offered a tease of the second-generation CLA ahead of its debut at CES.

The original Mercedes-Benz CLA, in baseball terms, knocked it out of the park, the compact, coupe-like sedan not only generating a massive sales surge but drawing in the sort of hip young buyers that the German brand long had trouble reaching.

Americans are expected to buy about 22,000 CLA sedans this year, a sharp decline from the model’s 2015 peak, when Mercedes delivered about 30,000 of them. That said, considering the rapid shift from passenger cars to light trucks – including the similarly sized Mercedes GLA crossover – the CLA remains an essential part of the brand’s line-up.

Auto Show News!

“We’re still bullish on sedans,” Dietmar Exler, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, told TheDetroitBureau.com during a Los Angeles Auto Show interview, and the German brand aims to prove that with the upcoming launch of the second-generation CLA.

Sport-utes carrying luxury vehicle makers to strong sales.

by Joseph Szczesny on Dec.04, 2018

The newly updated Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is helping the automaker to another U.S. sales crown.

Mercedes-Benz is leading the race for the luxury vehicle sales crown for the third consecutive year, heading into December with an edge over its closest competitors, BMW and Lexus.

Mercedes reported it sold 31,022 vehicles in November, an increase of 0.6% from November 2017. On a year-to-date basis, Mercedes-Benz sales totaled 283,943, with an additional 34,062 units for vans and 1,154 vehicles for smart, bringing total sales volume to 319,159.

Sales News!

“Demand for our SUV line-up including the GLA, GLC and new G-Class combined with increases for the E-Class and new CLS fueled results for the month,” said Dietmar Exler, president and CEO of MBUSA. “We anticipate a solid close to the final weeks of 2018.” (more…)

Mercedes Debuts New GLE Ute in Los Angeles

The new GLE is bigger than its predecessor.

by Michael Strong on Nov.30, 2018

Mercedes-Benz rolled out its new 2020 GLE sport-ute at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Most of the L.A. Auto Show product intros centered either a new EV or SUV – sometimes both – Mercedes-Benz took on the latter with the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE.

The new GLE is more evolution than revolution with the updates for the 2020 model focusing more on innovation than design makeover. The new model gets updates on its existing advanced driver assistance systems.

Auto Show News!

“The new Mercedes-Benz GLE has a wealth of innovations. For example, the active suspension system E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL on a 48-volt basis is a world first,” said Dietmar Exler, president and USA, Mercedes-Benz USA. (more…)
