Is Toyota Next to Pare Back its Passenger Car Line?

US CEO “taking a hard look” at model mix in the era of the SUV.

No longer #1; the Camry is just one of the Toyota passenger car models losing momentum.

With the exception of the Mustang, Ford is winding down production of passenger cars. Fiat Chrysler has eliminated almost all of its sedans and coupes, as well. In an era when SUVs have come to rule the roads, could Toyota be far behind?

While we’re not likely to see the Camry or Corolla nameplates vanish anytime soon, the Japanese giant is also rethinking its model mix and could toss some of its sedans, coupes and hatchbacks as it puts more of an emphasis on sport and crossover-utility vehicles, according to the head of its North American operations.

“We are taking a hard look at all the segments we compete in, to make sure we are competing in profitable segments and that products that we sell have strategic value to the brand,” Jim Lentz told the Wall Street Journal.

Car of the Year? Even Honda Accord Falls into a Black Hole as Sedan Sales Continue to Wither

It may be new for 2018, but U.S. buyers have had only a tepid response to the latest Honda Accord.

Few recent product launches generated more buzz than the debut of the 2018 Honda Accord. Long one of the U.S. market’s best-selling nameplates, the 10th-generation sedan quickly racked up a slew of awards, including North American Car of the Year.

But despite all the rave reviews, Honda is struggling to retain momentum for the Accord. American motorists purchased just 21,751 of the sedans in April, a 19.3% year-over-year decline. And even when adjusting for the fact that April 2018 had two fewer sales days than the year before, the dip was 12.5 percent. And Honda isn’t alone. The completely redesigned 2018 Toyota  Camry, a Car of the Year runner-up, suffered a 5.0% drop in volume in April.

“They’re both brand new vehicles and award winners, but I’m not sure that has any impact now,” said Joe Phillippi, head of AutoTrends Consulting. “Consumer tastes are changing. Everybody wants SUVs and CUVs.”

Toyota Set to Reveal New RAV4 at NY Auto Show

Critical debut for what’s now Toyota’s best-seller.

Toyota hasn't done much to the RAV4 since 2013, nevertheless, it has overtaken the Camry as the brand's best-seller.

Last year saw some momentous changes in the U.S. automotive market, perhaps most notably the surge in demand for SUVs, CUVs and other light trucks. And nowhere was that more apparent than at Toyota where the compact RAV4 toppled the brand’s long-time sales leader, the Camry sedan.

So, Toyota will have a lot riding on what it plans to introduce at the New York International Auto Show later this month, the first complete makeover of the RAV4 since the 2013 model-year. The Japanese giant is counting on the crossover to help it gain even more momentum at a time when there seems to be no end in sight to the light-truck boom.

Toyota isn’t saying much about the fifth-generation, 2019 crossover, other than to note it will make its debut at New York’s Javits convention center on the morning of March 28, but some details can be gleaned from a teaser image and inside sources.

Buh-Bye Camry; Pickups, SUVs Now Own Top Sales Spots

Despite giving the Camry a stylish makeover the sedan continued to lose momentum last year.

If anyone still questions the way light trucks have come to dominate the U.S. automotive market you only need look at the 2017 sales charts to see how passenger cars are on virtual life support these days.

Perhaps the most significant development finds that the Toyota RAV4 last year outsold the Camry for the first time ever. And so did the Nissan Rogue.

The Last Word!

The overall numbers for 2017 weren’t good, the U.S. market posting its first decline since the end of the Great Recession. And demand likely would have dipped more than the modest 5% if it weren’t for the strong, late-year surge as motorists in Florida and Texas raced to replace vehicles destroyed during the summer’s devastating hurricanes.

The next-gen Toyota Camry is the first in a line of new vehicles featuring the maker's more exciting exterior styling efforts.

Few cars in recent history have enjoyed the success of the Toyota Camry, which has been the best-selling car in the United States for the past 15 years and counting.

But Toyota hasn’t become the one of the world’s largest automakers by resting on its laurels and for 2018 the Japanese automotive giant has taken the difficult step of remaking the Camry for increasingly demanding world filled with increasingly finicky buyers unsure about whether they want to drive a car or have a car drive for them.

The 2015 Toyota Camry is full of surprises, including the fact that it got a top-down makeover just three short years after the last generation's introduction.

We live in an era of individuality. Whether it’s cellphones or sedans, Americans want products that reflect their individual tastes and needs. That’s especially true in the auto industry where buyers can choose from hundreds of different offerings and even a luxury brand like Mercedes-Benz has promised to deliver 30 new models by the end of the decade.

Toyota Expects to Sell 100,000 More Cars in 2014

Strong fundamentals, redesigned Camry make the difference.

Toyota Vice President Bob Carter told a crowd last night in New York that the maker will sell 100,000 more vehicles this year.

Toyota expects industry-wide vehicle sales to hit 16.3 million units, an increase of just over 5% and expects to sell 100,000 more units this year than it did in 2013, according to Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales senior vice president for automotive operations.

During a speech in New York, Carter noted the growth this year is slightly slower than the past few years, but is being driven by stronger economic and market conditions and a hangover pent-up demand from the recession.

Moreover, 400,000 more customers than last year are expected to come off leases from all brands and most will turn around and buy or lease a new vehicle, helping push sales higher, Carter added. (more…)

New car and truck sales are still humming along in 2014, but if you’re searching for a deal, compact and midsize sedans are the segments where you should start the hunting.

There are deals for those looking to lease or buy, especially for the Fiat 500. Right now, according to KBB.com, a 2014 Fiat 500 can be had for as little as $99 a month for 24 months. It requires nearly $2,400 down. However, if you’re looking to buy, the same car can be had for $265 a month for 60 months using the $3,000 cash back the automaker is offering buyers.

Ford F-150 Tops 2014 Most American Vehicle List

Japanese makers take seven of top 10 spots.

Ford's F-150 full-size pickup truck was named the "most American" vehicle by Cars.com.

As the most patriotic of holidays – Independence Day – approaches, it may come as a shock to discover that if you want to buy an “American” car, you may need to go to a Toyota or Honda dealership.

Cars.com released its annual list of “Most American” vehicles and once again, the Ford F-150 topped the list. However, the Toyota Camry placed second for the second year in a row. In fact, four of the top six “American” cars are Toyotas, according to the website.

The list reflects the levels of American-made parts on new vehicles. The vehicles on the list have an American-made parts content of 75% or more. For the 2014 model year, just 13 models assembled in the U.S. have domestic-parts content of 75% or higher, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but three of those were disqualified because they’re being discontinued. Hyundai Takes Aim at Toyota with 2015 Sonata

New Korean sedan tones down styling, adds more features.

Not all that long ago, Hyundai was an afterthought in the competitive midsize sedan market, largely focusing on bargain hunting buyers. But all that changed, a few years back, when it introduced a stylish new remake of the Sonata sedan, the first model to showcase its distinctive “Fluidic Sculpture” design language.

For 2015, the Korean carmaker is rolling out an all-new version of the Sonata, and while it is toning down the previous model’s sometimes over-the-top angles and curves, Hyundai is growing more confident it can take on even some of the midsize segment’s most formidable players, notably including the Toyota Camry.
