Midsize Truck War May Heat Up Fast

Once seemingly dead, market is going to get crowded fast.

The new Ford Ranger is likely to be just the first of a wave of new midsize trucks.

Once written off for dead – or at least dying – the midsize pickup market is coming back with a bang, but not only are sales on the rise, but also is the number of players entering, or returning, to the segment.

The question facing the industry is whether the list of brands might be growing too fast and too large, something that could make it hard for anyone to turn a profit.

Among the latest to target the U.S. midsize market are Ford and Jeep, both returning after lengthy absences. But Volkswagen could be eyeing its opportunities, as well as Mahindra & Mahindra, the Indian automaker that recently begun building off-road vehicles at a small plant in the Detroit suburbs. And Hyundai is moving forward with the development of a car-based compact pickup based on the Santa Cruz concept of a few years back. (more…)

Gas Prices Keep Rising; Might Truck and Ute Sales Fall?

Analyst thinks prices are getting high enough to hurt SUV sales.

With gas prices averaging nearly $3 a gallon in the U.S., at least one analyst is concerned truck and utility vehicle sales could be impacted.

Going into the Memorial Day weekend, the traditional opening of the summer driving season, the average price of gasoline across the U.S. continues to climb and analysts expect even higher prices lie ahead, prompting at least one respected analyst suggest buyers of new vehicles may start to rethink their purchase decisions.

Gas prices jumped 12 cents during the past 14 days, and six-cents since last week, landing the national average at $2.93 – the highest price point going into the Memorial Day weekend since 2014, according to AAA.

“AAA forecasts nearly 37 million travelers will hit the road for the holiday weekend. Compared to an average of the last three Memorial Day weekends, pump prices are nearly 50 cents more expensive and climbing,” said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson.  (more…)

Buh-Bye Camry; Pickups, SUVs Now Own Top Sales Spots

Toyota's mainstay sedan didn't even crack the Top 5.

Despite giving the Camry a stylish makeover the sedan continued to lose momentum last year.

If anyone still questions the way light trucks have come to dominate the U.S. automotive market you only need look at the 2017 sales charts to see how passenger cars are on virtual life support these days.

Perhaps the most significant development finds that the Toyota RAV4 last year outsold the Camry for the first time ever. And so did the Nissan Rogue.

The Last Word!

The overall numbers for 2017 weren’t good, the U.S. market posting its first decline since the end of the Great Recession. And demand likely would have dipped more than the modest 5% if it weren’t for the strong, late-year surge as motorists in Florida and Texas raced to replace vehicles destroyed during the summer’s devastating hurricanes.

Delayed a Day, Ford Sales Also Take a Tumble

Ford's Super Duty provided a rare bright spot for the automaker in October.

A day late – and a dollar short, it seems, as Ford Motor Co. says its sales also took a double-digit dip during October, in line with the overall U.S. new car market slide.

The news wasn’t entirely bad, however, Ford reporting growth by its long-struggling luxury brand, Lincoln, as it rolls out an assortment of new and updated products, including the all-new Continental flagship sedan.

By the Numbers!

Ford issued its numbers after a day-long delay due to a fire that knocked out electrical power to its corporate headquarters in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn. The rest of the industry didn’t fare especially well, even without Ford’s downward pull. While a few makers reported strong, and even record, sales for October, the market was down about 4% year-over-year.

October US Auto Sales Hit the Skids

Ford delays sales report due to fire at headquarters.

Jeep sales had been reliably strong for FCA during the past few years; however, they fell 7% in October.

The tempo of new vehicle sales slowed during October as every major automaker reported a drop during October.

Ford Motor Co., which also was expected to report a drop in sales, delayed the release of its October sales due to a fire in an electrical substation in the company’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. The fire, which happened yesterday, caused the evacuation and closure of the building.

The big surprise was a 10% drop in sales by FCA, which had posted a long string of sales increases, stretching back more than five years until it had to re-state its sales figures this summer under pressure from lawsuits by dealers and Securities and Exchange Commission. (more…)

Carmakers Face Tough Test as Market Flattens

Honda's John Mendel says there is a chance that automakers will beat last year's record sales.

Manufacturers are eager to roll out new models this fall and even adding more capacity in an effort to gain an edge over rivals.

But they are also facing a highly competitive market where manufacturers are being tempted to raise incentives to protect market share, noted Stephanie Brinley, an analyst with IHS Automotive.

Summer Blend Makes Gas Prices Rise

Refineries shifting to special seasonal mix.

Gas prices are on the rise as producers move to the summer blend of fuel.

With the summer driving season fast approaching, the price of gasoline continues to climb, pushing the average price beyond $2 per gallon, according to a new report by AAA.

Despite increasing for 36 of the past 41 days, the national average is at its lowest price point for this same date since 2009, according to AAA.

“The average price of $2.06 per gallon represents an increase of two cents on the week and 24 cents on the month. Pump prices continue to reflect year-over-year discounts, and drivers are saving 34 cents per gallon versus this same date last year,” the organization noted. (more…)

Trucks Rule at Chicago Auto Show – and Across the U.S.

Automakers race to add new products, more capacity.

The Chevrolet Trax is one of the newest utes from GM, and sales are outstripping supply.

Chevrolet faces the sort of challenge most automakers can only dream of. Its various pickup plants are operating at full, three-shift capacity and can’t build any more trucks. If anything, says marketing executive Sandor Piszar, that means the bowtie brand is losing possible sales.

“The toughest part is keeping up with demand,” said Piszar, during a conversation at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show’s media preview. “We’re running flat out at all our plants.”

Picking up on the Trends!

Actually, Chevy isn’t entirely unique. Hyundai is struggling to keep up with demand for utility vehicles like the Tucson, shifting capacity at its plant in Alabama to build more of the mid-range Santa Fe Sport. Ford, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan, with rare exception, every automaker TheDetroitBureau.com spoke with is laying out plans to boost truck capacity and, in many cases, add more truck models.

Truck Sales Driving Down Fuel Efficiency Numbers

Low gas prices encourage consumers to buy trucks, SUVs.

Low fuel prices are encouraging consumers to buy more full-size pickups and utilities than cars, driving down fleet efficiency.

After years of progress, the drive to improve the efficiency numbers of the U.S. automobile fleet has stalled as consumers opt for light-duty trucks and utility vehicles rather than passenger cars in the current sales frenzy.

While domestic, Asian and European carmakers are enjoying some of their best sales ever in the U.S., the sales of passenger cars to American customers has actually fallen during the first 11 months of 2015.

The numbers are stark. Sales of cars of all types have dropped 2.2%, while sales of trucks and utility vehicles have increased 12.7%. The shift means that trucks will outsell cars in the U.S. by roughly 1 million units this year, according to numbers collected by Auto Data. October Auto Sales Frighteningly Good

October auto sales are expected to be the best October results since 2001.

The auto industry is looking at another big month in October as sales are moving at very brisk pace and carmakers, with the exception of scandal-tarred Volkswagen, continue to post sales gains.

New-vehicle retail and total sales in October 2015 are expected to be the strongest for the month since 2001, when automakers’ “Keep America Rolling,” 0% financing incentives propelled new-vehicle retail sales to 1.6 million units.

“September was a strong month — bolstered by the Labor Day weekend — so the expectation is that we would see some weakness is subsequent months, but that hasn’t been the case,” said John Humphrey, senior vice president of the global automotive practice at J.D. Power. “Through the first 18 days in October, retail sales are up 7% compared with the same period a year ago.” (more…)
